About St Edmundsbury

The borough is in West Suffolk, at the centre of the Cambridge, Norwich and Ipswich triangle. There is access to Europe via the ports of Ipswich, Felixstowe and Harwich. Stansted is a national airport at the borough’s south-west flank and there is easy access to the M11. In the middle of the borough is Bury St Edmunds, twice voted the best small town in the world. In the south Haverhill is among the most ambitious of towns and refuses to be overawed by any of its larger neighbours. We are surrounded by extensive rural areas, a mixed environment which has made the area popular with residents, business people and a growing number of tourists.

The council's commitment as an employer

The council is committed to creating an organisation where all staff are valued, work in harmony and have access to what they need to play an active and inclusive part in the organisation. We will work as an employer to promote social inclusion, respect for others and equal opportunities for all (see the Equality and Human Rights Commission website: www.eoc.org.uk)

We also work with our partners to achieve best practice and ensure the best use of resources across Suffolk. We are committed to promoting:

  • equal and appropriate opportunities in employment;
  • flexible, family friendly working arrangements wherever possible including term time working, job sharing and working from home;
  • appropriate recruitment, learning and development and promotion practices and procedures; and
  • the authority's equal opportunities policy, ensuring that employees and councillors support the policy and guard against  institutional  discrimination.

Race Equality Scheme

As part of the Race Equality Scheme 2005 to 2008 Cabinet Report W4 (PDF 230kb) we will monitor, evaluate and review policies in terms of employment and service delivery to ensure that  policies are achieving our aims and objectives. We will review our action plan annually.
