The focus in recent years on the problems caused by the 'size zero' obsession of the fashion industry, makes this a particularly relevant moment to look back and remind ourselves of the ways the desired shape for women has changed over time. Whether it is the shape which women actually want to be, or whether it is the shape which society or fashion has prescribed for them, women have gone to amazing lengths over the centuries to emphasise this or that part of their bodies.
In this exhibition we are following the twists and turns, the ins and outs, through which the female shape has passed during the last two hundred years with examples drawn from the museums costume collections, showing how their changing shapes reflect the changing roles of women in society.
