Behind the doors and walls of houses in the centre of Bury St Edmunds are delightful gardens – of all sizes – which are open once a year for charity.
This year the Hidden Gardens of Bury will on Sunday 17 June 2012, the 26th time the event has been held. As before, the event will be raising money for St Nicholas Hospice Care. So far more than £250,000 has been raised.
The annual event is a treat for garden lovers and a chance to see behind about 30 houses in the historic streets of Bury St Edmunds, laid out in a grid pattern by the monks from the town's 12th Century abbey.
Visitors may be surprised to find fruit and vegetables, greenhouses, ponds, unusual trees, lovely lawns and sunny patios with pots, many of them an oasis of calm.
Several of the garden owners offer teas and refreshments or have plants and produce for sale.
The event is open from 11am to 5pm.
Tickets and programmes are available in advance from the Tourist Information Centre in Bury St Edmunds (01284 764667, tic@stedsbc.gov.uk) or on the day on the Angel Hill, Bury St Edmunds (outside the Angel Hotel).
