Dear Sir/Madam,
My memories of “D-Day” happened to be my 21st birthday; I was working at “The Iron Foundery”, Stowmarket, and had just started the 6am-2pm shift.
It was my turn to start a fire going, the store was a large one, so needed a lot of paper and sticks, clever me, put the wood into a “flammable” polish to get the fire going quickly, just as I threw the match into the stove, flames came out of the stove and singed my eyebrows. I did not expect that to happen, just as it happened, the foreman came to the place we worked and cam to me and said “Joan, you will remember your 21st birthday in more ways than on, as today is “D-Day”. Troops have made the landings in Normandy”. I still remember all this as I am now 80 years old!!
Yours sincerely,
Joan Gray-Davis

PS, D-Day was the day my boyfriend died…
