Children and young people's play

St Edmundsbury Borough Council is responsible for the development, improvement and maintenance of the play areas in Bury St Edmunds, Haverhill and a small number of rural locations.

We are continually looking at ways of improving play opportunities in the borough and have carried out a full audit of all borough-owned play areas for conformity to the Disability Discrimination Act.

Play Partners logoPlay partners’ is a partnership between trained play workers and children and young people to ensure they have a stake in what is on offer for them.

We offer free open access play sessions where children between the ages of 5 – 15 can come and play. Children are encouraged to help plan the sessions and choose the kind of activities that they would like. For more information visit our Play Partners pages.

Play area inspections

Within the Parks and Landscapes section we have a dedicated play area inspector, whose job is to inspect all the borough council and parish council play areas within St Edmundsbury. The inspector carries out a safety and maintenance check of all the borough council owned sites located in Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill, once a week.

During a routine weekly check the inspector examines each site for hazards such as broken glass, damaged panels and worn swing seats. The inspector carries a broad range of tools and replacement parts so that, alongside the routine maintenance, simple repairs can be carried out immediately. If larger parts are required, or the work needs to be issued to a specialist contractor, the details are passed back to the office.

The majority of villages within the borough of St Edmundsbury have a play area, which is owned by the parish or community council. These sites are inspected monthly by St Edmundsbury Borough Council on behalf of the parish council, who are then advised in writing of any work that may be required.
