The Mayor of St Edmundsbury, Cllr Christopher Spicer, invites you to his New Year's Eve charity ball at The apex, Bury St Edmunds. Saturday 31 December 7pm.

For three Sundays in November, come and enjoy live traditional music and browse through a selection of unusual Christmas gifts. There will be craft stalls and plenty of festive cheer, with the Anglo-Saxon Hall decorated to celebrate the pagan festival of Yule. Free entry to the village on these days. Bury St Edmunds Christmas lights switch on
Bury St Edmunds light switch on run by Bid for Bury Event will start at 2pm and will combine the Christmas lights switch-on with Charity night. Real penguins will be in town from 2- 5.30pm. Reindeers and Santa 4pm-6.15pm and at approximately 6.30pm Santa, with his reindeers, will leave from outside Cotwolds and head along the Buttermarket to the stage. Lights will be switched on at 7pm. From 4.30pm there will be entertainment and the usual fairground attractions will be in town, there will be 27 charity stalls, and street entertainment. For more information contact

Clare Christmas lights switch on
A parade begins by the parish church in the High Street at 5:45pm to the Christmas tree in Market Hill. There will be glo-sticks and other items for children. The Mayor of St Edmundsbury will switch on the lights at 6pm. There will be entertainment, coffee, mulled wine and hot dogs. Some shops and cafes will stay open later than usual. The eighth Christmas Fayre will have over 300 stalls selling a variety of gifts, crafts, food and seasonal products for all your Christmas needs. With fairground attractions and some great on-stage entertainment there's something for everyone. More details:

Park and ride
Our seasonal park and ride service in Bury St Edmunds began with the Christmas Fayre at the end of November and will run on the three Saturdays leading up to Christmas, 3, 10 and 17 December.
The park and ride runs from:
  • Olding Road car park, easily accessible from the west junction of the A14 (junction 42). The drop off and pick up point is the bus station in the town centre.
  • Kempson Way on the Moreton Hall Estate, with easy access to the East exit on the A14. The drop of and pick up point is Honey Hill, next to Angel Hill.
Both sites will operate from 10am to 5.45pm. The cost is £4 per car, regardless of how many passengers.

Bury St Edmunds Town Council is sponsoring a free bus service from various parts of the town into the centre on four Sundays from 27 November. See the
Free Christmas bus timetable (PDF 36Kb) for details. No fares will be taken, but passengers can make donations to St Nicholas Hospice Care.

2, 9,16 and 23 December  Free parking on Friday mornings in Haverhill
Between 8am and 11am, on the four Fridays leading up to Christmas, 2, 9, 16 and 23 December there will be no charge for motorists using St Edmundsbury Borough Council's pay and display spaces in Haverhill.

The free parking only applies to the council's pay and display places, not private car parks.

Follow an elfin helper on a trail through the woods, collecting golden cones to give to Santa in his woodland igloo. 10am to 4pm £5 each child, adults free. Every child received a small gift. Booking essential - phone 01284 757088.

4 December  Seasonal Ghost Stories
For those who like a good ghost story, Moyse's Hall Museum is once again the atmospheric setting for two tales by local author M R James. Starting at 2pm the stories are for people over 16. A Winter's Tail 
A magical illuminated trail through the 'wild woods of wonder' at Nowton Park, Bury St Edmunds. Friday, Saturday and Sunday 9, 10 and 11 16, 17 and 18 December. Experience the enchanted atmosphere of the woodland garden at night – and meet the characters who have come to leave their wishes for the unicorn. Open 4.30pm – 7.50pm. Tickets £4 in advance only from the apex booking office: phone 01284 758000. £1 transaction fee for tickets bought with a credit or debit card over the phone or in person. Late night shopping began with the Christmas lights switch on, on Thursday 17 November and continues for the six Thursdays leading up to Christmas. On these evenings, St Edmundsbury Borough Council owned car parks in the town centre will be free from 4pm onwards.

Children's Christmas workshop
Bring your little ones to the visitor centre to make some special reindeer food, Rudolph and his friends will see it sparkling on your lawn and they'll know just where to land. Or perhaps your Christmas tree needs brightening up with some festive Christmas cones? Children must be accompanied by an adult. Reindeer food £1.50 a child, Christmas cones £1. No need to book.
