BurySOUND 2010

BurySoundA6-flyerfront125x174The winners of BurySOUND 2010 were Twisted Piglet and runners up were Nik Lowe and Band.

Even though BurySOUND has an overall winner, the aim of the competition is much more about developing the talent of young people within St Edmundsbury.

The winners have a chance of playing at the Apex, the new Bury St Edmunds venue with an audience of up to 700 people! We are expecting quality entries this year with a real battle for the winning prize.

The Final took place on 12 November at the Apex, Bury St Edmunds

  • Go.Fly.Win
  • Nik Lowe and Band
  • The Peripheral
  • Twisted Piglet
  • Fight like Sharks

Arriving at the Apex, many were surprised to see the queue of people waiting to be let in, so a much larger turn out than the last heat was a dead cert. After asking around, it was clear that there was no favourite to win and it was pretty much even between all of the bands.

Taking to the stage first were The Peripheral. Delivering a well rounded performance containing various types of music, from songs that were getting the crowd into a circle pit frenzy, to a cover of Take Your Mama by the Scissor Sisters which got most people screaming along.

Up second were Nik Lowe and band, regulars on the Bury music scene at the moment. With the usual catchy and sticky tunes, sung with just the right amount of emotion by Mr. Nik Lowe himself. He was accompanied by one of the most enthusiastic drummers around and the happiest looking bassist for miles. Giving a reliable performance as always and never forgetting to get the crowd involved.

Third to the stage were the highly anticipated Go.Fly.Win. They were the only band of the night to truly take advantage of the huge stage that they have been set free upon; the crowd certainly reacted well with this by mirroring their movements on a greater scale. By the last few songs of their set the front of the stage was shaking, not sure if it was from the mind blowing triple bass fills on the drum or the crowd jumping through the floor.

Up to the stage next were Fight like Sharks. Now they were unfortunately not one of the favourite of the night as they were a big too heavy for some peoples liking. There was also a large discussion between a group of parents about the inspiration behind the name, or the lack of it. They gave a fluent and well polished performance with the crowd getting involved, but some saying that its not the kind of music they would buy.

After about 20 minutes of sound men and band members running around the stage with a keyboard frantically, it was announced that due to technical problems, Twisted Piglet may not be able to perform tonight as the keyboard was not working. The decision was made for the band to go ahead with their set, with a few song changes and the keyboard player being an on-stage entertainer. There was talk amongst the organisers of them playing for valor but this was not the case. They delivered the liveliest performance of the night to a well established fan base who understood how much this competition meant to them. Finishing on a cover of All the small things, they certainly didn't let their lack of keyboard put a dampener on the night.

Taking the well deserved title of BurySOUND winner 2010, the £250 Soundsplus vouchers, 2 days at the Shrubbery Recording Studios, 100 Free CD's and launching next years BurySOUND is Twisted Piglet. Taking the runners up prize of 2 days recording at WSC were Nik Lowe and Band.

Heat One took place on Friday 8 October at The Apex, Bury St Edmunds

  • Fight Like Sharks
  • Go Fly Win
  • Keep 'em Keen
  • The Ascots
  • Twisted Piglet

Heat One results

On Friday evening, Bury's freshest venue saw the first of the new local talent seeping in. With a variety of acts from various backgrounds preaching to the crowds with sounds that they crave.

Up first were Bury based 2 piece The Ascots.  Describing themselves as "A little Socialist Angst if you wanna' have a listen" they kicked off with an instrumental intro, followed by covers of Jamie T and a simple ukulele melody with words, a steady introduction to the night ahead. Flying on stage next were Twisted Piglet with their comedic songs - one about falling for a girl with swine flu - they somehow oozed stage presence without actually moving that much, still managing to get the crowd into a small frenzy.Up next were the highly anticipated Go.Fly.Win, grabbing the night by the horns and giving it a good ol' shake to wake everything up. They brought the stage to life, finally taking advantage of the huge space the bands had.Fight Like Sharks sauntered on next, with unspoken promises of the liveliest band of the night, they certainly fulfilled it, the security guards like angels in hivis, wading through to split the crowds up. Ending the night and with the only female to take to the stage was Keep 'Em Keen. Their set lists was designed with every intention to please the crowd with Paramore covers and that trademark sound that comes with young Bury musicians.

Appearing at the final on November 12th will be Twisted Piglet & Go.Fly.Win.

Heat Two Friday 22 October at The Apex, Bury St Edmunds

  • Hat
  • Nik Lowe and Band
  • The Peripheral
  • Three Green Wizards

Heat Two results

With a more lively start than the previous heat, Nik Lowe & Band took to the stage first. They made probably the most effort to get the crowd going.Taking to the stage next were Three Green Wizards, or so everyone thought. Due to technical difficulties their performance was delayed by about 10 minutes but once they got going, everyone soon found out they were well worth the wait. They also worked their double-bass-pedaled magic by drawing in people off the streets, getting the crowd a little bigger and beefing them up slightly.Third to the stage and also one of the Judges favorites were The Peripheral. They certainly got the crowds attention and drew people to the front of the stage but once they were there, there was little sign of life. Their performance itself was brilliant, musically speaking, but not much to watch, with none of them moving more than a step.

Finishing the night on probably the biggest crowds were HAT. With the guitarist on a wireless amp setup, he had freedom to roam the entire stage, and made the most of it. With him and the front man being the first people of this competition to really make use of the brilliantly large stage that The Apex offers. Their energy even rubbed off on the audience with a four-man moshpit that was formed.

Joining the other finalists on the 12 of November will be Nik Lowe & Band and The Peripheral.

Two bands from each heat will go through to the final and the audience's favourite band will not only win the competition but will also get £250 vouchers for music store Soundsplus, two days' recording at The Shrubbery Café and Recording Studios, and 100 CD duplication provided by Infallible Duplication. Alongside this, they will be invited back to launch next year's competition. Runners-up will win recording sessions at West Suffolk College and all the bands will receive vouchers for Soundsplus and a session at the Rehearsal Rooms.

BurySOUND is an alcohol, drug and smoke free event for young people 13 years plus, organised and run by St Edmundsbury Borough Council. The organisers reserve the right to refuse entry.

BurySOUND Launch Party 2010
Emma Outerbridge

Its that time again, for the streets of Bury to be filling with the sounds of the year to come. Launching the event were Nik Lowe, The Peripherals, Ready For The Fall and last years winners Cure  Caballo.

The night was warm, people were being drawn in off the streets by the promise of free drinks, shade and good music. Enticing yet more people in was the Bury born-and-bred Nik Lowe. Delivering well executed performance of some calm yet catchy songs, starting the night off with a relatively calm atmosphere. Taking the stage next were The Peripheral. Arriving in the tightest of jeans with the messiest of hair and giving a performance that reflected this brilliantly, they led the night to a more energetic atmosphere which was warmly welcomed by the crowd of excited teenagers forming around them. With a very unique yet catchy cover of Justin Timberlake's Cry me a river - the crowd seemed almost infatuated with them by the end of their set. Up next were young Bury boys, Ready For The Fall. Now their image was not as impressive as their predecessors, but it has to be said, that their lead singer had the most hair in the building. Giving people an insight to the heavier side of the Bury music scene, with 2 guitarists and a drummer addicted to his double-bass pedal. Remember the name as I can image you will be hearing a lot more over the next year. Finishing the night on a high were the winners of BurySOUND 09, Cure Caballo, getting the crowd going more than any of the other acts and working up a sweat by the end of the first song. With some new material but still keeping their act as tightly polished as they did in the heats last year, its not too hard to see why they won.

With 3 months for bands to sign up, there is sure to be some fresh talent appearing at the heats which take place in October at the Corn Exchange.
