Contractor appointed

Taylor Woodrow Construction has won the £47 million building contract for the new Cattle Market development.

Construction is due to start on site in the next few weeks and will last for approximately 24 months. Many of the construction workers required during the development phase will be recruited locally and when the development is complete it will create hundreds of new jobs.

Taylor Woodrow is an active participant in the Considerate Contractor’s scheme, in which it guarantees to carry out all operations in a safe and considerate manner.

Workers will also stick to noise restrictions outside normal working hours, provide wheel washers for site vehicles, run a park-and-ride scheme for workers, use an out-of-town holding area for delivery vehicles and minimise disruption to local homes and businesses. They will also appoint a dedicated neighbourhood liaison manager available on site at all times during working hours as first point of call to resolve any problems with local residents, businesses and the public.

Managing Director, Tim Peach, said: “We are sensitive to the character of Bury St Edmunds and will be working extremely hard to minimise any effect construction work will have on local business and residential communities.

We have an excellent record and have won many awards which recognise the way we work, our people, our excellent health and safety record and the quality of the work we produce.”

New Town Centre Manager

Bury St Edmunds has a new Town Centre Manager, Steve Peters.

Steve has a background in high street retail, commerce and tourism. He says:

"I am very proud to take up this position in promoting, protecting and enhancing the great vibrancy there is within this beautiful town. Bury St Edmunds has a great deal to offer and to join at this time is especially exciting with the commencement of the Cattle Market development. We want to enhance the town to keep its competitive edge compared with other regional centres around us."

Steve hopes to work with the local and regional authorities, local businesses, market traders and organisations, the chamber of commerce and resident and voluntary groups and act as a catalyst in taking the town forward.

Steve can be contacted at the Town Centre Management office in Guildhall Street, or call 01284 766258.

Green transport day

Find out about environmentally-friendly alternatives to the car at a special seminar on 29 November at Denny Bros in Kempson Way, Bury St Edmunds from 12.30pm to 6pm.

The event, organised by the West Suffolk Green Business Forum with support from St Edmundsbury, will feature displays and demonstrations on bio-fuels, electric bikes and green travel plans. Internationally-renowned urban designer Ben Hamilton-Baillie will give a talk and show a video diary of a trip around Bury St Edmunds.

People will also have the chance to have their photo taken with the new Lotus Exige 265E, a high performance sports car run on bio-ethanol fuel. This renewable fuel is made from crops such as cereals and sugar beet, which absorb carbon dioxide as they grow so the fuel is much more environmentally friendly than petrol or diesel.

Tickets are £10 for members of the Green Business Forum and £25 for non-members. For information contact peter.gudde@stedsbc.gov.uk or telephone 01284 757039.

Access and parking

Don’t forget St Edmundsbury Borough Council has produced two leaflets to give you information on parking and getting around the town.

The leaflets are called 'Easy Routes in and around the Heart of Town' and 'Easy Access’ for people with disabilities. They include a map of the town centres showing car parks, drop off points and toilets and can be picked up from Council offices, the bus station, Tourist Information Centre and Moyse’s Hall Museum or call 01284 757683.

Christmas park and ride

A special Christmas park and ride scheme will be up and running for the Christmas Fayre weekend and on Saturdays during December to take shoppers into town to limit congestion over the Christmas period. Charges will be just £1.50 per car (so if you get two or more people in your car it will work out even cheaper than our cheapest car park if you each arrived in your own car!) and buses will run every 15 minutes.

If you’re travelling to Bury from the east or south, the parking and pick up points will be at Denny’s and Sealey’s car parks on Kempson Way at Moreton Hall. If you are travelling from the west or north, use the park and ride at West Suffolk College, Out Risbygate.
