The apex – highest cultural quality in the heart of the town

The exciting new multi-purpose public venue, The apex, will be opening its doors in the autumn, bringing a buzz to the heart of Bury St Edmunds.

A huge amount of interest is being shown by a wide range of organisations and people of all ages looking forward to a top quality, versatile venue with superb acoustics and facilities. The apex will host a wide variety of events such as concerts, performances, exhibitions, wedding receptions, dinners, dances, conferences, seminars, markets and dance classes.

The building has evolved over the years from a simple four-walled 'hall for hire' to a building at the heart of town which will be enjoyed many generations into the future. This is one reason why the costs have grown over the years as well – the current revised cost is £18.6 million. There are many other reasons – the main one being that the council could not get one contractor to both build the 'bricks and mortar' shell of the building and fit out the inside as well. The building is an incredibly complex design, tucked between shops and apartments and designed to have a range of uses making it as versatile as possible, unlike the Corn Exchange which it will replace.

The modern multi-purpose auditorium with its two balconies and full backstage support facilities will be fully accessible and have a state-of-the art floor and seating system. This means it will be flexible enough to cater for a multitude of functions, including:

  • 500 people seated theatre style for performances and seminars;
  • more than 700 standing for concert performances;
  • up to 350 for dinner dances and wedding receptions; and
  • various combinations of conferencing set-ups.

In addition to the auditorium there will also be three smaller rooms that can be hired individually or as syndicate rooms, along with a large range of equipment and services on offer.

The cultural impact on the borough – and beyond – will be tremendous, with many more events and activities able to find a home from the autumn. There will simply be nothing else like it with this quality, versatility, position and facilities for many miles around.
