The main pool at Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre has been closed following the discovery of some damaged tiles.
On Monday (22 March) staff found tiles from a 40 square metre section (about 10% of the pool) had lifted. As the glazed tiles are sharp and would have been potentially dangerous to swimmers, the pool was immediately closed. The pool is now being drained - a process that takes several days - so a detailed assessment of the damage and repairs can be carried out. The teaching and leisure pools are not affected and remain open.
The Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre will be closing for 16 weeks from 19 April for major upgrades to its plant and machinery, although some areas will be able to open in May. The main pool will remain closed from now until the centre reopens in August. Outside facilities, such as the athletics arena and all-weather playing area, will not be affected by the closure. Repairs to the pool will be carried out at the same time as the plant upgrade.
