Engineers are set to move on to the Cattle Market site in Bury St Edmunds during the next two weeks to start essential preparatory works on the major redevelopment project.
St Edmundsbury Borough Council will be upgrading the existing access from Parkway into the car park at the Cattle Market. Work to improve drainage from the surface car park will also be carried out, along with some alterations to the footpath running across Prospect Row.
These enabling works have been scheduled to take place before construction on the scheme begins in the autumn. Sections of the car park will be closed while the alterations are completed, but the work has been planned in phases to ensure the maximum number of parking spaces remain available throughout.
Cllr John Griffiths, Leader of the Council and chairman of the Cattle Market Redevelopment Working Party, said:
“These preparatory works represent the start of another vital stage in the redevelopment of the Cattle Market site. Each phase has been carefully planned to keep disruption to a minimum, and will pave the way for the main construction project to begin.”
Signs will be displayed in the car park showing the areas which will be affected and the dates of closure. Drivers will also be advised of alternative car parking at the multi-storey off Parkway, where it costs just £1 for a full day’s parking.
