Small children will be getting to grips with a huge task when they help St Edmundsbury Borough Council staff to plant 400 trees around a pond near their playground.
Around 60 Year 3 children (aged seven to eight) from Burton End Primary School will be putting on their woollies and wellies to help plant indigenous trees such as hawthorn, field maple, cherry, alder, holly, common privet, spindle bush, hazel and wayfaring tree. Luckily the trees are small – most will be around 60-90cms (2-3feet).
The pond is in a field near the children’s playground and the landscaping work is being funded, at a cost of £1500, by St Edmundsbury Borough Council.
Cabinet member for Leisure and Sport Cllr Terry Clements, said:
“I am delighted that these schoolchildren will have the opportunity to help us with this landscaping scheme and I hope they will enjoy watching the trees mature as they grow older themselves.”
