RETURN OF THE RING QUEST AT WEST STOW

6 February, 2004

The Ring Quest Family Challenge is set to return to West Stow Country Park near Bury St Edmunds during the forthcoming half-term holiday - with all-new clues and prizes, plus additional activities and quizzes, the event should be even bigger and better than before!

The Ring Quest is a Lord of the Rings themed challenge for the whole family.  To complete the Ring Quest, families form their own fellowship and together follow the clues hidden throughout Middle Earth - otherwise known as WestStowCountryPark and the Anglo-SaxonVillage - collecting runes along the way to solve the final puzzle and save the realms of the Elves, Dwarves and Men!

Fellowships that successfully finish the Ring Quest will be entered into a prize draw for a chance to win a selection of Lord of the Rings games.

Chris Lewis, West Stow Country Park Ranger, said:

“The Ring Quest is great fun for kids and adults alike and you don’t need to be a Lord of the Rings expert to take part. It’s an opportunity to use your brain and your legs and given that there is a whole new set of Ring Quest clues for this half-term, it should be a challenge for everyone including people who have done the Quest before.”

Chris continues:

“Not many people know that Tolkein was an expert on the Anglo-Saxons. In fact some of the characters from Middle Earth speak and write the same language as the Anglo-Saxons that actually lived here at West Stow in the sixth century! There are many fascinating links between the Lord of the Rings and the Anglo-Saxon period, so the Anglo-SaxonVillage at West Stow is the ideal location for a challenge event like the Ring Quest.”

The Ring Quest event will be running everyday from Wednesday 18 to Sunday 22 February. Each fellowship pack for up to 5 people (including a maximum of two adults) will cost just £5 and under fives are free. The quest starts at West Stow Visitor Centre which opens at 10am and closes at 5pm, although the last pack will be sold at 3pm.

West Stow also offers a large free car park, an excellent play area and a small café and shop. Follow the brown tourist signs to the country park, which is six miles north-west of Bury St Edmunds off the A1101.
