| September 2006 Monsoon is coming! Monsoon/Accessorize is the latest retailer to sign up to the Cattle Market development. Monsoon already has a store in the town but will be taking three times the space it has now so that it can stock its full range of ladies’ and children’s clothing and accessories and increase its trading dramatically. The new shop will be located between Next and Wallis, which will face on to the new public square. The company has been looking for larger premises for some time now and it is expected that its current Buttermarket unit will be snapped up once the Cattle Market scheme opens in autumn 2008. Other retailers to have signed up include TopShop/TopMan, H&M, River Island, New Look, Wallis, Next, HMV, Waterstones and Debenhams. Work starting soon Construction work will begin next month with hoardings going up mid – end October. The Roundhouse has now been dismantled and stored until a suitable site can be found for it. The contractor is soon to be announced. Keep your eyes peeled in the local press for details. | Go-ahead for public venue St Edmundsbury Borough Council has given the go-ahead for the new multi-purpose venue which will be the lynch pin for the cattle market scheme. The borough council has confirmed its investment of £16.2million (£12million for the venue and £4.2million for an underground car park) and accepted a grant of £1.5million from the East of England Development Agency (EEDA). £1million of the EEDA grant will go towards the cost of the venue and the other £500,000 towards street improvements for St Andrews Street South, Parkway, Kings Road, Central Walk, Risbygate Street and Woolhall Street. The new venue will be a multi-functional public building that will be equipped to host a wide variety of events including exhibitions, conferences, concerts, weddings, entertainment and community events. It will help give the town centre a real community feel and give it a vibrancy outside normal shopping hours. The street improvements work will include landscaping, pick up points and signage. |
| Bury St Edmunds ambassadors We all love Bury St Edmunds and, to prove this, businesses and voluntary organisations have been invited to nominate some of their front line staff to become ambassadors for the town during the Cattle Market construction period. Briefing sessions will be held at the Athenaeum on 19 September. If any organisations have forgotten to return their form please call 01284 757034 as soon as possible or email communications@stedsbc.gov.uk Parking More people are coming in to park in the town more often according to statistics which show an increase in parking activity from last year. The car parks to see the biggest increase are Parkway surface and the multi storey but the good news is they still have plenty of spaces with the multi storey still having around 200 spaces at peak times. Ram Meadow also has more spaces now as the coach park has been converted for car use. Cattle Market works are bringing changes to parking availability so keep up to date with news on the best places to park. The exit from Prospect Row has now been reinstated and there are more parking bays available again but over half of Risbygate Street is now cordoned off for contractors and the new temporary toilets. If ever in doubt, head for Parkway or Ram Meadow where there are nearly always spaces available.
