| August 2006 Tenders are in Tenders for the Cattle Market construction work were submitted during July and are now being reviewed. The contractors and proposed sub contractors are being called in for interviews to go through the finer details of their bid and a financial appraisal of each is being carried out. Once this process is finished we will be able to announce the preferred contractor ready for work to begin. Toilets The St Andrews Street toilets will close for the last time on Sunday 1 October and new temporary toilets will open on Monday 2 October. The temporary toilets will be located in the Risbygate Street car park. The water and drainage systems were put in place in June and the top section of the Risbygate Street car park will close on Monday 21 August to allow for the foundations to the toilets to be laid. The toilets themselves will be delivered in September and then the services will be connected and ramps, decking and lighting will be installed. Other public toilets are available at Ram Meadow, Abbey Gardens and the bus station. And don't forget that if you're eating or drinking in town the local cafes and restaurants also have their own facilities for their customers. | Royal Mail Sorting Office The new Royal Mail sorting office on the edge of the Moreton Hall estate is almost complete. The building is due to be handed over to Royal Mail in the next week or two and this will allow Royal Mail to move into their new facility over the August bank holiday weekend. The old sorting office will be demolished in September. Traffic study The latest traffic study has been completed by Faber Maunsell, an independent traffic consultant. This looks at traffic flows and car parking demands over the next 20 years. No need was identified for more parking but there was a call for measures to encourage a shift away from car usage and for controlled management of town centre car parks through tiered charging systems. It also recommends setting up a park and ride scheme in the next ten years or so. The full report is on our website at www.stedmundsbury.gov.uk under Highways and Transportation. | Parking We’ve been studying parking trends in the town since the start of development works on the Cattle Market site. Customers are relocating to the multi- storey and Parkway surface sites. There is still high availability in Prospect Row but people seem to prefer to stay away from the works. The multi-storey is certainly proving popular now as it is great value at £1 all day and it’s even cheaper if you buy a season ticket. The location is handy for the new cinema and it is only a few minutes walk from the town. The good news is it has received a Parkmark award for safety and there’s still plenty of room! Even at peak times there were more than 200 spaces available. What’s happening in September -
Lights, bins, bollards, signs, map machines, street furniture and gates to be removed from site. -
Ram Meadow coach park will become car park – 80 extra spaces. -
Coaches will drop passengers in town but park at Rougham Hill lorry park. -
Bus shelter to be removed. Bus stop moved to outside Palmers, St Andrews Street South. -
Remove traffic islands in School Yard. -
Appoint construction contractor. -
Full archaeological investigation will begin along the front of St Andrews Street South. New leaflet Keep your eyes peeled for a new ‘Getting around the heart of town’ leaflet which will be out in September with up-to-date details on parking and information about the town. | Athenaeum open days The newly refurbished Athenaeum will be open to the public on Monday 21 August and Tuesday 22 August.
