Cattle Market car park closes

Sunday 8 October

Part of the Cattle Market car park will close on Sunday 8 October.  The part that will be closed is from St Andrews Street South to a line approximately from School Yard across to Prospect Row. This is about 570 spaces.

Around 600 spaces will be available at the Parkway side of the car park, plus a further 600 nearby in the multi-storey (which has never yet been full to capacity). Ram Meadow has around 80 extra spaces now and 20 accessible parking spaces will be available at the Risbygate car park, off Nelson Road.

The car park will remain closed but hoardings will not be going up on site until later in October. The closure needs to take place now to allow the safe completion of various engineering works before construction starts.

There will be a temporary vehicle exit through School Yard on to Risbygate Street as well as the main exit on to Parkway because some engineering work will still be going on in the Parkway side of the car park.

Communications: During the coming week we will be communicating this to people in the following ways:

  • media releases (including specific information to radio traffic desks);
  • advertisement in the Bury Free Press (29 September) and Citizen (3 October);
  • posters throughout the Cattle Market car park on lampposts and ticket machines;
  • Town Centre Newsletter;
  • advance warning signs on approach roads;
  • flyers, car parking leaflets and cards showing where more information is available, hand-delivered to shops throughout the town centre;
  • flyers and parking leaflets at each of our information points (Moyse's Hall, borough council offices, Tourist Information Centre, bus station, library, Athenaeum, leisure centre and Abbey Gardens).
  • team of staff in the Cattle Market car park at various times (starting this Saturday) handing out flyers and car parking leaflets;
  • information on the website, with link to car parking leaflet.

We will also be painting a line across the car park so people have a visual marker to see where they will not be able to drive beyond once the closure takes place.

Pedestrians: Safe routes will be signed through the remainder of the car park signing people along Nelson Road, or Parkway and past Lloyds Bank, and Risbygate Street or along Kings Road (which becomes one way on Monday 9 October). People will also be able to use the existing pedestrian route past the sorting office.
