Bury St Edmunds Christmas Fayre should provide something for everyone

30 November, 2004

Traders have been beating a path to the Christmas Fayre Office to grab the last remaining spaces for stalls and tables on the Angel Hill and in the Athenaeum. Word has spread that the Fayre is the place to be when it comes to showcasing your wares.

Shoppers are in for a feast of fine foods and gifts if the line-up of traders is anything to go by. From handmade jewellery and handbags to silk headscarves and decorations, the quality and range of goods on offer is fantastic. As shoppers walk onto the Angel Hill they will be met by lines of brightly coloured stalls and fairground attractions. From the War Memorial round to the traffic lights, the North Terrace will be decked out with fairground attractions. Between the Memorial and Abbeygate Street junction, French stalls will fill the area that is normally set out for car parking. On the opposite side of the Hill, traders from all corners of the UK will be selling gifts and refreshments.

If you are on the Angel Hill between 11am and 3pm on any of the three days, you may catch some of the on-stage entertainment. Again the choice is wide, anything from the Bach Choir to an Elvis impersonator. And if you’ve young children, don’t forget to call in and see Father Christmas at Angel Corner. The official opening of the Fayre will be at noon on Friday 10 December. Cllr Michael Jones, Mayor of St Edmundsbury and Cllr Frank Warby, Mayor of Bury St Edmunds will declare the Fayre open from the balcony of the Athenaeum.

The Fayre will attract people for miles around and enquiries from excursion coach companies have been very encouraging. Lots of people will obviously drive into town and car parking will be at a premium. The closest car park to the Fayre is Ram Meadow but that will soon fill up, so please make use of the multi-deck car park off Parkway or the park & ride service from St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s Office car park and the Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre car park in Western Way. Double-decker buses will operate a 15 minute shuttle service to and from Honey Hill (close to the Angel Hill) on the Saturday and Sunday of the Fayre. The cost is only £1 per car irrespective of the number of people on board.

We’re also appealing for a Town Crier to help us announce the opening of the Fayre – if you’ve got a voice that will be heard by the hundreds of people eagerly awaiting the delights of the Fayre , then we want to hear from you! Contact Justin Wallace, Tourism Manager on 01284 757094.

The Bury StEdmunds Christmas Fayre is being held on Friday 10 December noonto 7pm, Saturday 11 December 10am to 7pmand Sunday 12 December 10am to 4pm- don’t miss it!

Last Thursday’s Christmas lights switch-on in Bury St Edmunds attracted a big crowd. Many of the young children present would have seen Father Christmas disappear into Moyse’s HallMuseum after his on-stage appearance. If you didn’t have time to see Father Christmas on this occasion, don’t forget that he will be in his grotto at Moyse’s Hall Museum between 11am and 4pm on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 December and between 18-23 December. He will also be paying a visit to the Christmas Fayre.

For more information on the Fayre please contact Justin Wallace, Tourism Manager, on 01284 757 094 or email justin.wallace@stedsbc.gov.uk
