Access to Angel Hill and Crown Street, Bury St Edmunds, will be closed from the south from next Monday, 6 February, while changes to the road priorities in the area are made. Crown Street from its junction with Westgate Street to its junction with Honey Hill will close completely. Once the three-week period of work is finished there will be up to four further overnight closures, between 6.30pm and midnight. The diversion route for those wanting to access Angel Hill is along Westgate Street, Parkway, Tayfen Road and Northgate Street. Westgate Street will also be closed to eastbound traffic from College Street to Crown Street. Local traffic at this point will be diverted around College Lane, Churchgate Street and Guildhall Street.
The scheme has been the subject of extensive consultation over the years. Pavements in the area will be widened and the road priority changed at the junction of Westgate Street and Crown Street to deter too much traffic from driving along the historic Angel Hill. Some overnight parking will be retained, with double yellow lines preventing parking along most of the street.
More information, including a map of the diversion route and details of the closure order, including access information, are on St Edmundsbury's website www.stedmundsbury.gov.uk. Copies can also be obtained from the Borough council offices at Angel Hill and Western Way.
