Fifty refuse, cleansing and landscapes staff will be starting work from a new environmentally-friendly base when the council depot on Homefield Road, Haverhill opens this Friday.
The depot is built on a brown field site and has been designed to be highly energy-efficient and sustainable to cut energy and carbon emissions. The new structure features an air source heat pump to warm the building rather than using an oil-fired system and effective insulation will keep the interior at a comfortable temperature. A rain water harvester will capture rain to use for washing refuse and street-cleansing vehicles based at the depot and provide water for sanitary facilities. The site will also have a new environmental permit to store waste collected by the council so that vehicles will not need to make as many trips to recycling plants or landfill tips.

“This building is a perfect example of St Edmundsbury leading the way in West Suffolk in terms of saving energy. We are delighted to be opening the new depot to provide better facilities for staff as well as a much more efficient working environment and we are proud that it will be as 'green' as possible.”
