New homes planned for pub site

30 January, 2007

A piece of land left derelict following a devastating pub fire more than five years ago is set to be transformed by a new development which will create eight affordable homes.

St Edmundsbury Borough Council, working alongside Havebury Housing Partnership, has brought forward the plans for the Merry-Go-Round site in St Olaves Road, Bury St Edmunds, after completing careful negotiations with a firm which has a long lease on the plot of land. The council has also secured funding of £50,000 from the landlord – money which will be spent on environmental enhancements in the area.

A public consultation session, where residents can find out more about the plans, will be held on Friday (2 February) in the St Olaves community centre from 4pm until 6pm.

Cllr Jeremy Farthing, Cabinet member with responsibility for strategic housing, said:

“The borough council has worked very hard to bring all parties to the negotiating table to find a good use for this land, and we are confident the scheme drawn up in partnership with Havebury will breathe fresh life into this area and improve the environment for all of the residents in St Olaves.”

Dennis Heath, development manager at Havebury, said:

“Havebury is delighted to be working in partnership with the borough council and the local community to resolve this long-standing issue.”

During Friday’s consultation session, St Edmundsbury will ask residents’ opinions on how the £50,000 earmarked for environmental improvements should be spent. Once details are finalised, a planning application for the scheme will be considered by St Edmundsbury’s Development Control Committee later this year.
