Tomorrow (30 April), two detailed planning applications to redevelop Bury St Edmunds Cattle Market site will be submitted to St Edmundsbury Borough Council by developer Centros Miller. The applications (one for the Cattle Market site itself with the other relating to Market Thoroughfare) are both part of the same proposal for a new mixed-use development. At the heart of the scheme is a new public square surrounded by new shops (including a 85,000 sq ft Debenhams’ department store), residential apartments, cafes and restaurants, all neatly integrated with a new public building.
Tony Williams of Centros Miller, said: “Through extensive consultation with the people of Bury St Edmunds and close liaison with St Edmundsbury Borough Council, we feel that this design marries the town’s historical character with the very best of 21st century architecture.
“The proposal holds the key to Bury St Edmunds maintaining its place as a desirable shopping destination. As nearby cities and towns grow, it is vital that Bury St Edmunds embraces this opportunity to create an exciting new quarter, which will help attract more people to the area and support the local economy for years
to come.”
The scheme includes:
- A new public square
- New shops (up to 15,559 sq m)
- Approximately 56 new residential apartments
- A new public building to house a proposed auditorium
- Cafes and restaurants overlooking the public square
- Approximately 853 car parking spaces with 641 surface spaces and 212 underground below the public square.
During the next few months local people will be invited to comment further on the redevelopment proposal through a series of public exhibitions, consultation leaflets, with reply-paid cards, and the project website. Full details of the consultation plan will be announced later this month.
Depending on the planning process, construction could begin in 2005.
