To celebrate Compost Awareness Week, St Edmundsbury residents are being invited to shovel their own free soil improver at the Rougham Hill Household Waste Recycling Centre, Rougham Road, Bury St Edmunds, IP33 2RN.
The event runs over the next two weekends, (Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 May; and Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 May) from 9am to 4pm and you need to bring your own sacks. The compost has been donated by Viridor Waste Management and County Mulch and is subject to availability.
The soil improver is produced from brown bin waste collected in the borough and composted at the facility at Lackford. It is ideal for adding organic matter to garden beds.
The theme of this ninth National Compost Awareness Week is ‘Food for Thought’. Running from Sunday 3 to Saturday 9 May, the campaign aims to encourage people to try home composting and use the results to grow their own fruit and vegetables.
Details on how to order a subsidised compost bin will also be available and anyone living in Suffolk who places an order between 3 and 16 May 2009 will be eligible for a prize of £50 of garden centre vouchers donated by DHL, the logistics company that deliver the bins. The bins can be purchased through St Edmundsbury Borough Council. Please call Waste Management on 01284 757320 for more details.
