Bury Youth Festival 09

28 April, 2009

This May sees the launch of a brand new platform for young people in Bury St Edmunds to show off their creativity and talent. Bury Youth Festival, running for two weeks from Friday 8 to Sunday 24 May, features a wide range of activities across the town, including sport, music and art, many of them free.

Aimed at young people aged 13 plus, the festival will get underway with the BurySOUND launch party at the Lounge in Hatter Street at 7.30pm on Friday 8 May, followed by a rare opportunity to see Suffolk’s own parkour performers, The Art of Urban Movement, from 2pm on Saturday 9 May on Angel Hill.

The Abbey Gardens will host an up-cycling street art sculpture installation from Thursday 21 May to Sunday 24 May. Up-cycling is the art of taking raw material from street level to make something new. Amplitude, at the Rehearsal Rooms in St Andrew Street South from 6.30 – 8.30pm on Wednesday 13 and 20 May, is an opportunity for anyone of any level of musical ability to find whatever help they need to get going in the world of music. Sessions cost £5. Make an exhibition of yourself is for local young artists and performers to display their band, song, solo, short film, photographs, paintings or whatever. Another free event, this will be eight hours of non-stop live music, held from midday to 8pm on 25 May at the Athenaeum.

A photography competition, sponsored by the Bury Free Press, will run the entire length of the festival. All photos submitted on the website will be printed and displayed at the Lounge.

Cllr Lynsey Alexander, St Edmundsbury Borough Council Cabinet member for Culture said,

“There is so much talent and creativity out there and this festival gives every young person an opportunity to participate and win the acclaim of their peers. I believe it will be a focus for exchanging ideas, techniques and approaches, as well as being highly enjoyable. I hope it will be very well supported”.
