The 202 (Suffolk and Norfolk Yeomanry) Battery Royal Artillery, which was handed the Freedom of the Borough of St Edmundsbury in 1967, will exercise its right to march through the town at a special ceremony in Bury St Edmunds on Sunday.
The Battery, which is stationed at Blenheim Camp in Newmarket Road, will be re-roling to become Army Air Corps, stationed at Wattisham Airfield. The event will begin with a civic procession followed by a general salute, taken by Borough Mayor Frank Warby, given at 10.35am. The Battery will then march to St Mary’s Church with bayonets fixed for a special service. Once the service is complete, they will parade on Angel Hill again, while a fly past of Lynx helicopters will complete the timetable of events.
Angel Hill will be closed between 10am and 1pm on Sunday for the event.
Honorary Freedoms are given to people or organisations which have served the community in a distinguished way. The status is the highest tribute a borough can give and has been awarded just 30 times since it was introduced in 1885.
