Debate in St Edmundsbury’s council chamber took on an international flavour on Monday as young people from America visited to gain a taste of political life in the borough.
A total of 18 young people including 11 participating on an exchange trip from California joined St Edmundsbury’s own successful Youth Forum to share their experiences while exploring differences in the way the two country’s political processes work. The issues were wide ranging and opinions diverse as the debate raged beyond the planned morning and into the afternoon!
Youth services to elections, alcohol, schools, transport and environmental issues all had an airing and council members were on hand to chip in and ask questions. The day also provided the chance for the visitors to meet St Edmundsbury’s Mayor Cllr Frank Warby and look at the council’s collection of gifts and memorabilia.
James Jenkins, Youth and Community Development Officer at the council, said:
“We had a great day with all the young people voicing their opinions and asking questions. The differences and similarities between political systems became very clear and the forum was able to think and reflect on the benefits of each. I think the fact that the group all wanted to come back after lunch and carry on the debate, instead of having some free time, speaks volumes!”
The meeting was arranged as part of an extensive programme of visits and events planned for the exchange students.
