Compost giveaway

26 April, 2010

Keen gardeners in West Suffolk will be among those coming to compost giveaways on Saturday 1 May. Organised as part of Compost Awareness Week, Forest Heath District Council is running the event from 9am to 1pm at Brandon Country Park (Orchard Car Park), while St Edmundsbury Borough Council will be doing the same thing from 9am to 2pm in the visitors car park at Clare Country Park.

Compost Awareness Week is a national campaign which aims to encourage more people to recognise the benefits of compost. Free compost will be available as a thank you to Suffolk residents who have used local authority green waste services, contributing to our 46.53% recycling / composting rate.

Compost which has kindly been provided by County Mulch will be available on a first come first served basis while stocks last. You will need to bring your own bags, as bags will not be provided on the day and a shovel if possible.

John Jardine, County Mulch Ltd, said

"We have found that Suffolk residents are excellent at sorting their organic waste for composting, which allows us to produce a high grade soil improver, which improves the structure of the soil and helps retain moisture."
