Local bus passes set for renewal this month have been extended for an extra month, to ensure that passengers can make all their planned journeys.
The bus pass, issued on behalf of the government by St Edmundsbury Borough Council, entitles anyone living in the borough and who is aged over 60 or who meets disabled criteria to travel anywhere in Suffolk for free. From the beginning of April, it is being replaced with an extended National Smartcard, which allows free off-peak bus travel on local buses anywhere in England and 24 hours a day in Suffolk.
Current holders are due to receive their new passes by 31 March. In case of any delays, existing cards can still be used in Suffolk, but not outside of the county, until 30 April.
The concessionary fares scheme was introduced in April 2006. In St Edmundsbury there are nearly 12,000 concessionary fare pass holders who are entitled to free travel, with costs being met by the district or borough council where the passenger lives.
