Tough new binge-drinking campaign launched

24 July, 2006

Hard-hitting images illustrating the stark reality of binge-drinking are to tour Bury St Edmunds from 27 to 29 July to raise awareness of alcohol abuse.

The pictures, which have been posed by local models, will be displayed on a promotions van which will drive around the town throughout the day before parking in a prominent position at night. It is hoped as many people as possible will see the van and take its message on board.

The initiative, designed to highlight the dangers of binge-drinking while offering help to those in need, will also see volunteers hand out leaflets giving details of helplines during the course of the tour.

Funded by the West Suffolk Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, the campaign will be jointly launched by the police, licensees and St Edmundsbury's substance misuse coordinators.

Cllr Jeremy Farthing, Portfolio holder for Safe, Sustainable Communities and Environment, said:

"Although St Edmundsbury does not have a major problem with binge drinking, the issue has become a concern for many people within the community over recent years. It is therefore vital we do all we can to raise awareness of the devastating consequences it can have while offering help to those who need it. This campaign is guaranteed to shock but will hopefully make a difference.”
