Green Flag hoisted for the first time

23 August, 2006

A prestigious Green Flag marking out NowtonPark in Bury St Edmunds as one of the best green spaces in the country will be raised for the first time during a barbeque designed to thank staff and volunteers for their hard work which helped to win the award.

The celebration will take place on Tuesday, 29 August – around a month after the popular St Edmundsbury park was handed the Civic Trust award which recognises high quality and excellent environmental standards.

Nowton, which attracted more than 250,000 visitors last year, is the first St Edmundsbury park to win a Green Flag. The barbeque will give the borough council the opportunity to say thank you to staff and the volunteers who give up their free time to help with a wide variety of different schemes on site, including creating new features and completing conservation projects.

Cllr Paul Farmer, Portfolio Holder for Arts and Culture on St Edmundsbury Borough Council, said:

“It is only right that the hard work and dedication of the rangers and volunteers at Nowton Park is recognised – without them, winning this prestigious Green Flag award may not have been possible. Their commitment has ensured this beautiful open space remains popular with residents and visitors to the area alike.”
