The infamous Beowulf monster will be returning to the Anglo-SaxonVillage at West Stow near Bury St Edmunds this half term, when a group of costume re-enactment specialists known as the Wulfingas will be giving performances of short plays on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 June.
The special performances, entitled “Beowulf & Grendel” and “Beowulf & the Dragon” will be at 12pm and 2pm in the reconstructed Anglo-SaxonVillage. There is no need for visitors to book in advance to see the performances, which will be suitable for all ages.
In addition to the performances, costume re-enactments in the Anglo-Saxon Village will be continuing throughout half-term, with costume groups in residence every day between Saturday 29 May and Sun 6 June inclusive, providing visitors with a fascinating opportunity to meet these modern day Saxons and watch them living and working in the reconstructed Village just as our ancestors would have done 1,500 years ago.
West Stow Ranger Chris White says:
“The re-enactments this half term will really bring the Village to life for children and adults and will be a great way to learn about the Anglo-Saxons, which is a National Curriculum topic. The costume groups that are visiting are remarkably knowledgeable and skilled. During the course of half term week they will be demonstrating a huge variety of crafts such as spinning, weaving, dying wool, wood turning, leather work, forge work and baking using traditional techniques, all of which would have been essential in Anglo-Saxon times.”
The Anglo-Saxon Village is set in West Stow Country Park, seven miles NW of Bury St Edmunds off the A1101, with an excellent play area, café, gift shop, nature walks, lake, river and bird- hides all on site.
Performances on 6 & 7 June are included in the special event day admission prices. For opening hours and further information about this event and others at WestStowCountryPark and Anglo-SaxonVillage, call 01284 728718 or email weststow@stedsbc.gov.uk
