If you have ever wondered where the phrase ‘women and children first’ comes from, now is your chance to find out.
Moyse’s Hall Museum in Bury St Edmunds will be hosting an illustrated lecture on the story of the loss of the troop ship ‘Birkenhead’. The shipwreck that began the tradition of ‘women and children first’ occurred off the Cape on 24 February 1852 – 155 years ago this month. Those who were shipwrecked included members of the 12th Foot of the Suffolk Regiment, whose story is highlighted in the Moyse’s Hall Museum display.
The lecture will be held on Sunday 25 February between 2 and 4pm and includes light refreshments. Booking is essential as space is limited and the cost is £3.60 adults/ £3.10 concessions. Call into the museum or telephone 01284 706183 for more information and to reserve places.
Moyse’s Hall Museum is run by St Edmundsbury Borough Council and opens from Monday to Friday between 10.30am and 4.30pm and on Saturdays and Sundays between 11am and 4pm.
