The story of Bury St Edmunds’ first and only municipal aerodrome is revealed in a surprising book by local author and flying enthusiast Frank Whitnall.
The book has been printed in conjunction Bury St Edmunds Tourist Information Centre. Tourism Manager Sharon Fairweather explains,
“The book was first published by Mr Whitnall and our sales were so good that when all the stock ran out, we offered to help him re-print. It has attracted a wide readership. Local people as well as visitors have been intrigued by the story. We celebrate the role of Allied flyers during the war but this book adds a new dimension to the story. The town was already well used to having aeroplanes and flyers in its midst.”
Exhaustively researched, the book explores how aviation came to Westley, how it flourished in the 1930s and details its contribution to the war effort. It brings to life the exploits and characters of the day and gives insights into how local life adapted to the busy airfield.
‘Wings over Westley’ is available priced £9.99 plus £2.50 post and packaging from the Tourist Information Office, Angel Hill, Bury St Edmunds, 01284 764667, tic@stedsbc.gov.uk
