Cash boost for community groups

18 December, 2006

Community meeting areas will be created, village halls improved and new furniture provided after St Edmundsbury’s Cabinet approved funding for a diverse range of projects in its latest round of grant awards.

The council’s Cabinet approved the funding last week. Under the rural areas community initiatives fund, cash will go to:

  • GreatSaxhamParochialChurch Council – awarded £5000 to create a community meeting area in St Andrew’s Church;
  • Great Livermere Parish Council – given a £2185 grant towards reinstalling a parish pump on a village green;
  • Hargrave Parish Council – awarded £4000 towards improvements to Hargrave Village Hall to meet Disability Discrimination Act requirements;
  • Wickhambrook Parish Council – given £3500 to build a pathway which will improve access to recreation facilities (subject to a grant from Havebury Housing Partnership’s Community Investment Fund);
  • Parochial Church Council of St Leonard’s, Wixoe – awarded £4500 towards the cost of creating a community meeting area in the church;
  • Great Barton Thanksgiving Fund – given £5000 towards improvements to Great Barton Village Hall;
  • Stanton Parish Council – awarded £2000 towards new chairs and tables for Stanton Community Village Hall.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet has approved a total of £109,200 in funding for voluntary organisations for 2007/08. Those to benefit include:

  • Bury St Edmunds Art Gallery, which has been awarded £36,300;
  • Haverhill and District Volunteer Centre, given £12,000;
  • Bury St Edmunds Volunteer Centre, awarded £7000;
  • Bury St Edmunds YMCA, given £5000.

In addition, funding of £39,900 has been approved by the Cabinet for community centres across the borough. All of these grants will now be considered by full council early in the new year.

Finally, West Suffolk Victim Support, Gatehouse Caring in West Suffolk, Haverhill Advocacy and Mentoring Service (HAMS) and the Salvation Army Clements Community Project have all had bids for longer-term funding approved by Cabinet. These grants will be discussed by full council early next year.

Cllr Sara Mildmay-White, Portfolio Holder for Resources and Community Development, said:

“Grant aid from St Edmundsbury often makes a huge difference to community groups and voluntary organisations across the borough, and we are pleased to be able to support these worthy causes.”
