Bury tourism excellence recognised

18 September, 2007

St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s tourism team has been shortlisted for the regional Enjoy England Awards for Excellence, along with two other areas.

Delighted staff will have to wait until the awards ceremony on 18 October to discover if they have won.

The submission made by the team, based at the Tourist Information Centre on Angel Hill in Bury St Edmunds, impressed the judges. It included new initiatives such as more foreign language guides, an internet café, sustainable bags and Shopmobility. During the summer, a mystery shopper checked out the quality of the service in person and reported back on the knowledge and approachability of the staff and the high standard of the information available.

Cllr Nigel Aitkens, Cabinet member responsible for tourism said:

“Our borough has so much of interest for visitors and residents, but without the dedication and creativity of our tourism team, much would remain hidden. The team has previously won this award in 1999 and 2003, which proves that there are always new ways to help people to enjoy themselves. I wish them every success in the final.”
