Borough in big tidy

18 August, 2008

Photo opportunity: 10am Wednesday 20 August at the front of WestSuffolkCollege. Students joined by Principal Dr Ann Williams and Cllr Peter Stevens, Vice Chairman of the Joint Waste Committee fill the first bags of rubbish in the Big Tidy Up.

St Edmundsbury Borough Council and Forest Heath District Council will be at the forefront of the biggest tidy up ever in England this autumn, offering specialist equipment, advice and support to individuals, groups, schools and businesses to organise local clean ups.

The Big Tidy Up campaign is being launched on 1 September by Keep Britain Tidy and has attracted strong support. Nationally the target is to collect half a million bags of rubbish and St Edmundsbury and Forest Heath would like to contribute to achieving this target.

Forest Heath councillor, Nigel Roman, Chair of the Joint Waste Committee said,

“We are looking forward to working with many kinds of groups. Businesses find this is a very effective team building exercise and it is also a valuable learning experience for teachers and pupils. Young people bring great energy and endeavour to these tasks and we welcome as many as possible to join the effort. There are a million reasons to get involved and I encourage everyone to take part in whatever way they can”

St Edmundsbury councillor, Peter Stevens, Vice Chair of the Joint Committee said,

“St Edmundsbury and Forest Heath litter pickers collect approximately 6 tonnes of rubbish each week. This campaign aims to deep clean the borough ready for the winter months. Anyone willing to take part can call the Tidy Up Hotline on 01284 757337, or log on at www.thebigtidyup.org to register and be sent tidy up kits, containing specially commissioned high visibility tabards, refuse sacks and materials for promoting tidy up events.”
