Park and ride extended as new visitors boost Bury

18 March, 2009

Crowds of new visitors are helping to boost Bury St Edmunds’ economy. Shoppers are finding much of interest in the old parts of town and the market, as well as in the new development so St Edmundsbury's park and ride scheme is being extended to help everyone get into town as easily as possible and stay to explore all that's on offer.

Town Centre Manager Steve Peters said,

“The town has been buzzing over the last few days. People seem to be spending time checking out what the town has to offer, rather than rushing in and out. There is so much for them to discover that we are hoping they like what they see, come back again soon, and get a chance to  find the parts they haven’t yet explored.”

Cllr Sara Mildmay-White, Chair of the Bury St Edmunds Area Working Party, said,

“It is bucking the current economic trend by attracting new people to shop locally and bringing new money into the local economy. This is exactly what this extension to the town centre was intended to do.”

As a result of the success of the arc opening, the council has decided to extend the Saturday park and ride until Easter Saturday. The well-signed car park at Olding Road will have a service every 15 minutes into town, costing £1.50 per car load.

A park and ride service from Nowton Park will also operate on Maundy Thursday, 9 April, when the Queen’s visit will see Angel Hill, Chequer Square and Shire Hall car parks and Angel Hill road closed from 6pm on Tuesday April 7 until 6pm on Thursday 9 April.
