Children from years three and four at Abbots Green Community Primary School are displaying their beautifully-made models of Bury St Edmunds landmarks in buildings around the town.
Fifty children from the two classes made the models at home over the holidays. They had been working on a topic called ‘our environment’, which included the history of Bury St Edmunds. They chose one of 31 buildings to recreate, including the Market Cross, Angel Hotel, cathedral, Norman Tower, Abbey Gate, W H Smith, Athenaeum and Borough Offices.
Now some of the models are going on display in the buildings that they represent. Lewis Alen (8 years), Reece Mayes (7 years), Marc Holliday (8 years) and Natalie Chapman (8 years) will hand their models to the Mayor of St Edmundsbury to be displayed at the Athenaeum and the St Edmundsbury's Borough Offices (both on Angel Hill) for the next couple of months.
Jenny Fisher, year three teacher said:
"The effort that has gone into making these models is remarkable. Members of the family have lent a hand and the detail that has been included is fascinating. We are very proud of what the pupils have learned and achieved."
And St Edmundsbury's Mayor, Cllr Margaret Charlesworth, added:
"I am delighted that the children have taken such an interest in the town's history and I'm so glad that members of the public will now have the opportunity to see these charming models."
