The local community is being given the rare opportunity to make its mark on history by naming new streets and squares in Bury St Edmunds.
St Edmundsbury Borough Council is asking individuals, schools, businesses and residents’ groups for their suggestions for names for two new streets and two new squares in the cattle market development.
The development, which opens in spring 2009 with a Debenhams, 35 other shops, homes and a multi-purpose public venue, has been designed to reflect the medieval design of the historic town centre. There are many historic street names in the town, and this consultation gives people a chance to add to that history.
Cllr Sara Mildmay-White, chairman of the Bury St Edmunds Town Centre and Cattle Market Working Party, said:
“This consultation gives people the unique chance to make their mark on history by naming a new part of our town. We are encouraging everyone to get involved and send us as many suggestions as possible. Be as imaginative as you can and your idea may well live on into the future.”
You can send in your suggestions in various ways:
-
email: naming@stedsbc.gov.uk
-
pick up a postcard from St Edmundsbury's offices, Moyse's Hall Museum, the bus station, Tourist Information Centre, Athenaeum or Bury Free Press
-
drop in your suggestion to any borough council office, addressed to the Communications Unit
-
Post to: Communications Unit, St Edmundsbury Borough Council, Borough Offices, Bury St Edmunds, IP33 1XB
Any suggestions need to be:
-
appropriate for a shopping or leisure environment; and/or
-
have historic relevance to the area; and/or
-
reflect the 21st century nature of the development.
The closing date for suggestions is 10 October. All of the suggestions will then be discussed by the Bury St Edmunds Town Centre and Cattle Market Working Party before a recommendation is made to Cabinet for final approval.
