St Edmundsbury Borough Council is asking for people’s views on major redevelopment plans which could see new homes, shops and warehouses created to change the shape of Bury St Edmunds forever.
A parcel of land north of Tayfen Road and Station Hill – which stretches over an area larger than the cattle market site – has been earmarked for redevelopment in St Edmundsbury’s Local Plan. The borough council has now put together a concept statement for the site, which will eventually be used by developers or landowners to draw up a masterplan which will shape the development.
St Edmundsbury is now asking for people’s views on the concept statement before it is discussed by councillors. The concept statement shows that the development could include new homes, retail warehouses, a small supermarket and other small shops, open space and car parking, as well as space for leisure activities. As part of the plan, the gas holder on Tayfen Road will be demolished and the railway sidings would be moved out of town.
Cllr Terry Clements, portfolio holder for Transport and Planning, said:
“This consultation gives people the perfect opportunity to make sure their views are heard at a very early stage in the planning process. This is a huge redevelopment which will change the shape of the town forever, so it’s vitally important to get it right.
“The Tayfen Road area is also a key gateway into Bury St Edmunds which must be treated with care to give visitors a lasting first impression of the town. I would encourage anyone with an interest in Bury to send in their views.”
The public consultation will run until 14 August. The full concept statement is available at St Edmundsbury’s offices on Angel Hill and at Western Way or on the website, at www.stedmundsbury.gov.uk.
