COUNCILLORS SCOOT AROUND BURY ST EDMUNDS

17 June, 2004

Photo opportunity – Tuesday 22 June at noon: St Edmundsbury councillors will be testing their skills on scooters provided by the St Edmundsbury Shopmobility service as part of National Shopmobility Day, from the pedestrian area between Woolworth and Next in Bury StEdmunds town centre.

A number of councillors will be seeing Bury St Edmunds town centre from an entirely different view on Tuesday 22 June, when they get to grips with scooters provided by the St Edmundsbury Shopmobility scheme as part of National Shopmobility Day.

Proposals were recently presented to St Edmundsbury’s Cabinet to relocate the popular Shopmobility service in Bury St Edmunds from Angel Hill to the bus station, allowing the service to increase from three days a week to six. Cabinet members at their meeting in June said they wanted to make sure it’s safe for Shopmobilty users to get across town using the pedestrian crossing outside the bus station and if St Johns Street would be wide enough for the scooters. They decided one way to find out would be for councillors to test the route themselves.

Councillors will be using their scooter experience on National Shopmobility Day as the perfect opportunity to try out the route from the town centre to the bus station, through St Johns Street and back again, paying particular attention to access and the crossing on St Andrews Street.

St Edmundsbury’s Shopmobility scheme will be operating from the pedestrian area between Woolworth and Next on Tuesday 22 June to mark National Shopmobility Day. It will also be holding scooter dressage tests from 10am where volunteers, scheme members and invited guests will put their scooter skills to the test.  There will also be a ‘Name the Scooter’ competition for the newest scooter to the scheme’s collection.
