New Ouida display at Moyse’s Hall

17 January, 2008

A special display commemorating a renowned Victorian novelist is to be unveiled at Moyse’s Hall Museum one hundred years after her death.

Ouida was born in 1839 and died in January 1908. As a friend of the well-known Cullum family, she had ties with Bury St Edmunds and spent large portions of her childhood playing at Hardwick House. A drinking fountain for dogs and horses was later installed in her memory at the junction of Out Westgate and Vinery Road.

During her career, Ouida produced more than 40 novels, children’s books and collections of short stories, which sold in large volumes. One of her most successful novels, Under Two Flags, has been made into at least three film versions, one of which starred Ronald Colman and Claudette Colbert.

Visitors can look at the display in Moyse’s Hall until the end of February. For more details, phone the museum on 01284 706183.
