Join us for a spectacular Christmas lights switch-on and laser show in Bury St Edmunds

16 November, 2004

Photo opportunity: Thursday 25 November - Christmas lights switch-on and laser show in Bury St Edmunds town centre. On-stage entertainment 6-8pm, laser show 6.40pm, lights switch-on at 7pm.

Following an on-site meeting with Laser Innovations from Haverhill, St Edmundsbury Borough Council can confirm that the annual Christmas lights switch-on in the centre of Bury St Edmunds will be extra special this year. The 20 minute laser show is guaranteed to provide the wow factor as smoke effects and music accompanies the lasers as they rake the buildings and night sky.

The entertainment kicks of at 6pm with a high voltage show from SGR FM. Frankie and Katie from the station’s morning show will be on stage with a collection of music and competitions plus slots for local performers to strut their stuff.

At 6.40pm, Laser Innovations sets the town centre alight with its stunning show. Then at 7pm, Father Christmas arrives on-stage, from who knows where, to join St Edmundsbury’s Mayor, Cllr Michael Jones, Bury Town Council’s Mayor, Cllr Frank Warby and SGR’s Frankie and Katie, for the official switch-on. More on-stage entertainment will then follow.

Leader of the St Edmundsbury Borough Council, Cllr John Griffiths said:

“Despite all the reports in the media recently saying that Bury St Edmunds would be gloomy this Christmas, we are once again setting the town a glow with a dazzling show of Christmas lights. We’ve pulled out all the stops at this year’s switch-on event with a spectacular laser display and exciting line-up of entertainment - it shows what can be done when everyone pulls together and I would like to thank all concerned.”

To add to the occasion there will be the usual fairground rides and attractions. The event heralds the start of Thursday late night shopping and the shops will be open until 9pm. Don’t forget, car parking is free from 4pm.
