A national award will be presented to Bury St Edmunds Christmas Fayre at 10am on Tuesday 23 March. The Speciality Market Award, previously won by famous enterprises such as Borough Market, London and Bristol Slow Food. The award will be presented to the Mayor of St Edmundsbury and Cllr Robert Everitt by Cllr David Farmer, President of the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA), and Jeremy Bradin of market software suppliers KPR Midlink, who sponsored the category. At the same time, a group of Leisure and Tourism students from West Suffolk College, who played an integral role in running the three day annual event will receive certificates from the Mayor.
Cllr Farmer and Jeremy Bradin said
"We were particularly impressed with the way local people were involved in so many aspects of the Fayre. The West Suffolk College students took every advantage of this splendid opportunity and the certificates recognising their contribution are well deserved.
Cllr Everitt said,
"The Fayre is a great asset. It is self financing and we estimate that it gives a £730,000 boost to the local economy. Bury St Edmunds is famous for its street market and specialist markets help promote Bury as a market town destination. Many visitors have said they will be back over the summer."
