Jubilee Walk facelift – work begins

16 January, 2007

Work is about to begin on a £460,000 project to improve an important gateway into Haverhill as part of £10 million plans to regenerate the town centre.

The scheme planned for Jubilee Walk will see new seating, handrails and bus shelters installed, while landscaping and resurfacing work will also take place.

As part of the enhancement project, an electronic board showing up-to-the-minute information to bus passengers will be installed along with several pieces of public artwork – including a clock and a sculpture to Owen, a popular ginger cat who used to live in the area. Texts or motifs will be inscribed in the pavement as part of the project, which has been designed to give Jubilee Walk a distinct character and identity.

Cllr Jeff Stevens, Deputy Leader of St Edmundsbury and Chairman of the Haverhill Area Working Party, said:

“Jubilee Walk is a key gateway into Haverhill and this work will uplift the entire area. The project is a very real example of the masterplan vision becoming a reality and will give the area a fresh new identity. I am sure the completed scheme will prove a hit with residents and visitors alike.”

The scheme was developed following public consultation and work is expected to take around two months to complete.

It forms part of the Haverhill masterplan vision, which has been designed to transform the town centre over the next ten years. St Edmundsbury has pledged £10 million over that time to help kick-start work and encourage outside funding. So far, a new 110-space Town Hall car park has been created on the Cleales site, while a planning application for a five-screen multiplex cinema complex on Ehringshausen Way was submitted to the council last week.
