Abbeygate Street traffic barriers unveiled

15 May, 2008

Photo opportunity: 3pm Tuesday 20 May, at the top of Abbeygate Street, opposite Palmers department store, Bury St Edmunds. Cllrs Terry Clements and Peter Stevens will unveil the new barriers.

A street in the historic core of Bury St Edmunds is being given a new feature aimed at assisting with traffic control. Instead of using regulation red and white signs and cones to close the Abbeygate Street to traffic, from 10am on Tuesday 20 May, high quality metal barriers and bollards will now be used.

The bespoke black metal barriers are designed to reflect the heritage of the area. They were commissioned following consultation, as part of a street scene strategy to create a series of beautifully paved and furnished streets and spaces at the heart of the town.

Cllr Terry Clements, St Edmundsbury Borough Council Cabinet member for Transport and Planning said,

“Bury St Edmunds’ historic environment is one of its greatest assets, and we want visitors and pedestrians to fully enjoy the experience. Abbeygate Street is vehicle free from 10am to 4pm daily, but repeated damage to traffic control fixtures was tending to undermine its character. We have now replaced them with this simple, elegant and high quality solution, to help enforce traffic control restrictions”.

Cllr Peter Stevens, St Edmundsbury Borough Council Cabinet member for Environment and Street Scene said,

“By enhancing the pedestrian and visitor experience in this main thoroughfare we hope to encourage the vibrant trade in Abbeygate Street”.
