In a hard-fought contest Bury St Edmunds-based band The Secret Hairdresser has emerged as the winner of BurySOUND 2004: The Band Competition.
Competing for first prize - giving Band Competition champions £750 worth of music equipment from Sounds Plus, two days in the West Suffolk College recording studio, an opportunity to headline at other gigs in the borough, plus two four-hour slots to play in the new Rehearsal Rooms opening in Bury St Edmunds in the New Year - were heat one winners The Secret Hairdresser, Animal Planet from heat two and recently announced heat three winners Ashborn.
As always, tickets for the final round of this increasingly popular event sold out soon after heat three. Playing to full capacity, the three bands battled it out on stage for the last time on Saturday 11 December in what can only be described as an electric atmosphere. The Secret Hairdresser is well known on the local scene and their experience showed with a tight, well rehearsed and entertaining set that went down well with the crowd and judges alike – and ultimately won them first prize.
The prizes were presented to band members by Cllr Sheila Wormleighton and Cllr Margaret Charlesworth, who congratulated all those who had taken part in this year's competition. BurySOUND 2004: The Band Competition is organised by St Edmundsbury Borough Council's Leisure Services and every heat this year, as well as the final, has been a sell-out.
