West Front works complete

13 November, 2007

Work to breathe new life into the historic West Front building by converting it into some of the most sought-after homes in Bury St Edmunds is now complete.

The grade I listed properties, which lie close to St Edmundsbury Cathedral, have been carefully restored over the past 18 months by developers Hawes and Southgate. During the project, the team has preserved the West Front's unique and historic qualities while converting it into homes with all the modern comforts. Work has included conserving the medieval remains of the flint core belonging to an 11th century Benedictine Abbey, onto which 17th and 18th century timber-framed houses and some early 19th century structures were built.

All but one of the homes have now welcomed their new owners, and guests on Thursday will be given the chance to look around one of the properties.

Cllr John Griffiths, Leader of St Edmundsbury Borough Council, said:

"St Edmundsbury's councillors and officers alike have worked very hard over several years to achieve the restoration of the West Front and we are absolutely delighted with the results. This is a unique project which shows what can be done when everyone works together. It also celebrates our rich heritage while bringing fresh life to some of the most wonderful buildings in Bury St Edmunds and I would like to thank everyone involved."
