A fascinating look at different themes of timekeeping and portraits will open in Moyse’s Hall Museum on Saturday.
This exhibition, 'Faces of Time' displays a selection of the most intriguing items from the borough's clock, watch and painting collections. Visitors will be able to see several items that have not been on display before along with old favourites including examples from the Gershom-Parkington Memorial Collection. Themes that are covered in the clock and watch displays include the Beginnings of Time and items that have been made or used in the Bury St Edmunds area, such as a Mark Hawkins lantern clock from the 1700s.
The clocks and watches will be complemented by paintings from the borough’s collections, including works by Mary Beale (1633-1699) Britain’s first professional female artist from Barrow, near Bury St Edmunds. Many of these pictures were given to the borough by the National Art Collections Fund from the Jeffree Bequest.
Cllr Paul Farmer, St Edmundsbury's Cabinet member responsible for arts and culture, said:
"I am delighted to see these exhibits in their attractive surroundings at our award-winning town centre museum, Moyse's Hall. The juxtaposition of clock and portrait 'faces' gives real meaning to the displays, helped by the new information panels which explain their background and relevance to today. This is just the start of making our collections more accessible. The future opening of the Great Hall and changing displays will ensure that we fulfil our aim of reaching an ever wider audience."
