More people using town centre car parks

12 December, 2006

Data collected from car parks around Bury St Edmunds over the last week has shown that nearly 7% more people are visiting the town compared to the same time last year.

Figures show that nearly 39,000 vehicles used the various car parks across the town. During the same week last year, the figure stood at just under 34,000.

In addition to the increase in people using the town’s car parks, 190 vehicles made the most of St Edmundsbury’s park and ride service this Saturday. This service will continue on 16 and 23 December between 10am and 6pm, travelling into town from Denny’s in Kempson Way and WestSuffolkCollege in Out Risbygate.

Cllr Terry Clements, Portfolio Holder for Transport, Planning and Leisure, said:

“These figures confirm that our plans for managing the car parks around Bury St Edmunds are working well. The variable message signs are already showing their worth, and it is good to see more people are coming into town – despite the claims made by doom and gloom merchants. These extra visitors prove that people continue to be attracted by the town’s charm, and that the future looks bright for Bury St Edmunds.”
