Photo opportunity: Wednesday 18 August 5.45pm on the all weather pitch at Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre, Beetons Way. Cllr Terry Clements, St Edmundsbury Cabinet member for Sport and Leisure, will join a training session for young female footballers chosen for the Centre of Excellence.
The new football season is upon us and a group of girls with a passion for football has demonstrated they are in a league of their own by being selected for trials at the Centre of Excellence in Ipswich.
Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre has been running football lessons for girls as part of its summer holiday activity programme and this year has seen an overwhelming number sign up to take part.
Six girls from the football team will now be able to take their love of football one step further when they compete in football trials at the Centre of Excellence – an initiative that forms part of the Suffolk Active Sport Programme with young players being identified by local authority Sports Development Centres. This isn’t the first time the team has had success; several of the girls were also chosen to represent Team St Edmundsbury at this year’s Suffolk Youth Games in July and came away with a silver award.
Cllr Terry Clements said:
“This represents another sporting achievement for young people in the borough and those taking part in the Centre of Excellence trials deserve every success after all the hard work they’ve put in. The next step will be to get local leagues in place as a follow up to mixed football in the younger age groups.”
Team St Edmundsbury and those attending trials at the Centre of Excellence will be on hand to give younger members of the football team plenty of tips for success and encouragement at their last training session this season, at the Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre on Wednesday 18 August from 5.45pm.
